Our Mission
Nevada Outdoorsmen in Wheelchairs was started in 2008 in order to provide hunting and outdoor experiences to individuals with disabilities who are confined to a wheelchair. The greatest benefits we provide are often unexpected. Each hunter brings a new set of challenges, and accomplishments that make each hunt unique. Often, it is the simple sense of "normalcy" that we provide that brings immeasurable joy not only to our hunter, but to his or her caretaker as well.
If we are able to arrange it, we try to bring two hunters out together to add a dimension of commonality. We have witnessed life-changing impacts from the amazing camaraderie that can develop from this kind of shared outdoor experience.
We try to dedicate five days early in the season to our Antelope hunt each year. This gives our hunters time to enjoy camping, hunting, and other activities if they are available. This also allows us warmer conditions, taking into account special circulatory issues our hunters often encounter. We've obtained an agreement with T.S. Ranch for ongoing hunts on property owned and operated by Newmont Mines that hosts a handicap accessible ranch house if the hunter chooses to forego tent accommodations.
All hunters must have their hunter's education completed in order to get their hunting license and participate in our program. We include this in our "gift" to them. This process exposes them to all aspects of safety in the field, and respect for land, animals, and nature. Beyond this, it's all about breaking the boundaries of their physical, mental, and often financial limits, allowing them to forget their disabilities for a short time and feel the sense of accomplishment that the very primal act of hunting provides. The hunt and the camping together have literally improved self image, given a sense of purpose, and raised personal expectations. They even provided one family memories of laughter, joy, and pride when the hunter passed away only a year after his hunt. Another hunter was lifted out of a deep depression and into a life motivated by paying it forward.
Now, more than ever, personal and corporate philanthropy is critically important as it enables us to purchase much of the equipment, tags and supplies we need each year. Generous contributions and support from individuals as well as businesses are always highly appreciated. We are a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization so contributions are tax deductible under section 170 of the federal tax code. Please think about how you can help.
