Rob has always had a generous spirit and worked to find ways to help others whenever he could. After suffering a devastating motorcycle accident and subsequent amputation of his right leg below the knee, he found himself even more determined to do something for others with physical challenges to face.
After suffering my own disability, I was blessed with a new understanding of the value of my hunting experiences not only to my physical recovery, but to my emotional and spiritual healing as well. The drive to get outdoors and do what I love was one of my strongest motivators. It was during my own recovery that I began to realize how fortunate I was in comparison to so many other hunters struck by much more severe disabilities than my own. Seeing programs on television that provided hunting services to severely disabled people, I wanted to participate in something like that here in my own state. I was disappointed to find that there was no such program in place.
My wife, Darcy, and I began working to get something started. With generous donations by local businesses, friends, and family, we purchased a wall tent and cots necessary to accommodate a wheelchair bound hunter and quickly began to gain momentum.
After addressing the Nevada Department of Wildlife about our plans and our need for tags, we were blessed with a call from Chad Bliss, who was at the meeting representing Eureka. With his tireless efforts, we obtained two Antelope tags from landowners in his area as well as a deer tag. Suddenly, our plans had tripled in scope, and we were on our way!
Chad continued to spread the word, and soon we had another generous donation from Nevada Bighorns Unlimited that enabled us to completely finance our first two Antelope hunts.
NBU has now partnered with us, enabling us not only to establish ourselves as a non-profit organization, but also to move our program forward and keep reaching out to disabled hunters who would otherwise be unable to enjoy the sport they love.
